What the counts mean.
Common questions.
What counts as a character?
Every letter, number, space, punctuation mark, emoji, and symbol counts as one character. Some platforms shorten links automatically — for example, X (Twitter) counts every URL as 23 characters.
What's the difference between characters with and without spaces?
Characters with spaces include every space, tab, and line break. Characters without spaces count only the visible characters, which helps when you need to hit an exact budget.
Why do SMS messages have different limits?
A standard SMS using GSM-7 encoding fits 160 characters. Adding a single emoji or special character switches the message to UTF-16 encoding, which drops the limit to 70 characters per message.
How long should an SEO title and meta description be?
Google typically shows about 60 characters of a title tag and around 155–160 characters of a meta description on desktop. Longer text isn't penalized, but it may be truncated in results.
Is my text private?
Yes. The counter runs entirely in your browser — your text is never sent to a server, stored, or tracked.
Say more in fewer keystrokes.
When you're up against a character limit, it's faster to talk it out and trim than to type from scratch. Spiel dictates on your Mac and drops the words where you're writing.
