How it works

How the test measures speed.

Words per minuteOne word equals five characters, the standard typing-test convention. We count your correctly typed characters, divide by five, then by the minutes elapsed.
AccuracyThe share of characters you typed correctly. Mistyped characters turn red, and you can fix them with backspace as you go.
TimingThe timer starts on your first keystroke and stops the moment you reach the end of the passage, so your result reflects your real pace.
PrivacyThe test runs entirely in your browser. Your typing is never sent anywhere, stored, or tracked.
Benchmarks

What is a good typing speed?

The average adult types about 40 words a minute. Around 60 WPM is fast, and professional typists often hold 75 to 100 or more. For comparison, most people speak at roughly 150 words a minute — which is why dictation can be so much quicker than the keyboard.

Common questions.

What is a good typing speed?

The average adult types about 40 words per minute. Around 60 WPM is considered fast, and professional typists often sustain 75 to 100 or more. Most people speak much faster — roughly 150 words a minute.

How is words per minute calculated?

This test uses net WPM: it counts your correctly typed characters, divides by five (the standard definition of a "word"), then divides by the minutes elapsed. Mistakes you don't fix lower the result.

What does the accuracy score mean?

Accuracy is the share of characters you typed correctly out of everything you typed. Fixing mistakes with backspace as you go keeps it high.

Is my typing private?

Yes. The test runs entirely in your browser — nothing you type is sent to a server, stored, or tracked.

Most people speak faster than they type.

A typical adult types around 40 words per minute but speaks at roughly 150. Spiel turns that gap into time saved, transcribing your voice on your Mac and dropping the words where you're already writing.
